# Cover paper for hardcover books

When printing a hardcover book, the cover paper plays an important role. The cover paper is wrapped around the sturdy greyboard, giving the cover its recognisable, professional appearance. This affects paper thickness, format and finishing. In this article we explain what to look out for.

## Why 150 gsm cover paper?

In a hardcover book, sturdy cardboard (2-3mm greyboard) sits beneath the cover paper. This cardboard provides all the rigidity the cover needs. That's why 150 gsm paper is ideal for wrapping: thick enough for a sharp, vibrant print, yet thin enough to fold smoothly around the board and edges without tearing or creasing.

The cover consists of three parts: front, spine and back. These are glued as one piece onto the cardboard. The thin paper folds easily around the edges without tearing or creasing.

## Technical requirements for the cover file

### File format: PDF/X-1a

Supply your cover as a PDF/X-1a file with embedded fonts and images in CMYK color mode. This is the standard for professional printing.

### Bleed: 3 mm

Add 3mm bleed around your design. This prevents white edges after trimming. Background images and colors must extend beyond the trim line.

### Calculating cover size

The cover format is: front width + spine width + back width + 2× wrap (approx. 15mm each side). Spine width depends on page count and paper thickness. Use our spine calculator for exact measurements.

### Embed fonts

Embed all fonts used in your PDF. Missing fonts are automatically replaced, which can lead to shifted text or a different appearance. This is one of the most common file delivery errors.

## Finishes & laminates

A laminate protects the cover against wear and gives it the desired look & feel. Each option has its own character.

### Gloss laminate

Gives your cover a shiny, vibrant appearance. Colors become more intense and the cover gets a slight reflection. Ideal for photo books and colorful designs.

### Matte laminate

Gives an elegant, calm appearance without reflections. The paper feels soft and looks modern. Perfect for novels, portfolios and business publications.

### Soft-touch laminate

Premium finish with a velvet-soft feel. Gives a luxurious, tactile experience that stands out immediately. The most popular choice for exclusive editions and gift books.

## Special effects

### Spot UV varnish

With spot UV varnish you can make specific parts of the cover extra glossy — like the title, a logo or an image. The contrast with a matte laminate creates a striking, premium effect.

### Foil stamping (gold/silver)

Foil stamping applies a metallic effect to the cover — usually for titles or logos. Available in gold, silver and other colors. This gives your book a classic, timeless character that immediately associates with quality.

Thanks to the three-part construction of a hardcover — front, spine and back on sturdy cardboard — the cover paper doesn't need to be thick. The rigidity comes from the cardboard, not the paper. This keeps costs lower and enables better folding quality around the edges.
